Thai food often falls into the ‘must have’ category when the taste buds demand that something special.
Like Indian, Italian and other ‘crave worthy’ cuisines, Thai is all about fresh produce and herbs in a ‘simpatico’ balance with each other. Actually, the balance of sweet, salty, spicy and tangy is most probably a more delicate balancing act in Thai cooking than other cuisines so you have to congratulate a chef when they get it right.
One such restaurant that gets it right (in terms of Thai cooking), is the Isis Thai Restaurant on Alona Beach.
Actually Isis so far is the only Thai Restaurant that we have visited in Bohol that understands the essence of this balance and actually delivers a really credible Thai experience. Why? Because the chef really understands flavour and of course uses fresh herbs. (and fresh coconut milk).
Our meals literally ‘zinged’ with freshness. Fresh kafir lime leafs, fresh ginger, fresh, galangal, fresh well…..everything!
The night of the review we were entertaining visitors so we had the chance to sample a wider range of meals than we normally get a chance to. Our meal consisted of Tom Yum Goong, Pad Thai, Green Chicken Curry, Fried Lemongrass Chicken, Red Beef Curry and of course rice. Other than the Pad Thai that was somewhat gluggy (wrong noodles?) all the dishes were flavoursome, well balanced and hearty.
The Isis Thai Restaurant is part of the Isis Bungalows (just head down to Alona and turn right and head to the end of the beach). Seating is a choice of indoors (non air-conditioned) or al fresco facing the waters on the beach.
So if the food is so good why not 4 stars or more? Good question. Food isn’t everything, in this instance the presentation of the dishes was somewhat slap dash and lacked ‘visual appeal’, not to mention the plastic plates. And while the service was friendly it lacked a certain level of refinement and we felt the staff were more interested in socialising (with each other) than focusing on customer service. Oh, and the fact that there was little in the way of lighting along the beach just before the restaurant made the meander home a cautionary affair.
